There are a number of questions frequently asked by people interested in taking up karate and we have listed them below.

"Will I get hurt?"

Karate is a physical activity and there is no more risk of injury than there is with other sports or physical pass times. Also, we deliver our training strictly controlled manner which greatly minimises the risk of injury.

"Is it just for men/children?"

Karate is for everyone and our classes have an even distribution of both adult and children, as well as males and females

"What if I'm not fit enough?"

Karate is a fantastic way to exercise and get fit as it promotes all round good health, it includes both cardiovascular & muscular.

Lotus Defence Karate-Do classes are designed in such a way that will gradually build your fitness levels.

We are able to work around most medical conditions and assist you to improve your physical fitness however, we do strongly recommend that you consult your doctor first if you have serious health problems.

"Am I too old?"

You are never too old to start karate, we have students of various ages in our classes and our oldest student started when they were 62 years old.

"What should I wear?"

To start with, all you will need to wear is loose fitting sports clothes, a t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms will do fine. As long as the clothes do not restrict your movements. Once you feel ready, you can order your karate suit (gi) either through your instructor or at you local sports store.

"How often do I need to train?"

How often you train is entirely up to you. There are a number of classes available to you through out the week which give you flexibility enabling you to train as much as you want on days that fit in with your life style. It is worth pointing out though, the less you train the harder it is to achieve your goals so it all depends upon your commitment to your training and your commitment to yourself.

"How long will it take me to get my black belt?"

The journey to black belt is an individual one and the time it takes to get there varies from student to student, mostly depending upon their individual effort and determination. Our students are encouraged to take one step at a time and set achievable goals to take themselves each step of the journey.

"Do I have to do tournaments?"

Tournaments are a completely optional part of your training. They are for those students who wish to test their skills against other karate-ka from other karate schools through tournaments, they have the opportunity to display both their kata and kumite skills.

"I've done karate before, can I transfer my grade?"

This should not be a problem, we have students who have been able to do this. The decision will be made on an individual basis.

"How do I become a member?"
