| Senior Instructor I'm a 2nd Dan instructor and I started training in Shotokan karate 18 years ago whilst in the Royal Air Force which I loved, but unfortunately had to take a few years out of training due to personal circumstances. When I returned to my training it was with GKR karate, a style which mixes Shotokan and Goju Ryu karate. I achieved my provisional black belt Shodan Ho in August 2006, my 1st Dan in July 2008 and my 2nd Dan in Dec 2009. I have been teaching for 8 years now and have to say that apart from becoming a mum, it is the most rewarding experience I have ever had. In addition to seeing my students rise through the grades and many go on to achieve their black belts, I have also seen them grow as individuals. I look forward to seeing you at one of our classes and embarking on your karate journey.
Assistant Senior Instructor I have been involved in martial arts since 1969 when my first experience was judo, I was an only child and my parents thought that it would give me confidence and experience to deal with every day life. Since then I have had experience of a few different types of martial arts such as, Jujitsu, Kendo and for the last 8 years Karate. I have been teaching karate for 6 years now. From the first time I started martial arts the main thing that caught my attention was the discipline, it can be taught by many but only mastered by one ’s self, when I realised this my approach to martial arts changed and that is when I truly understood martial arts. I then moved on to teaching, even at an early age all I wanted was to pass on my knowledge and help others to achieve their goals. It’s a good feeling to achieve ones goals but nothing can beat the feeling of helping others to achieve theirs. My martial arts now is all about learning new things and passing it on to others. Over the years I have experienced many styles of martial arts and teaching methods, some good and some bad which has helped me to constantly monitor and improve myself and my own methods. My inspirations are my fellow instructors and my students, to be able to see these improve day by day is what inspires me to keep pushing myself and get the best out of everybody including myself. My goal is to be part of a team that creates a unique martial arts club, one that is looked on by others, one that people want to be part of and one that sets the standard.
Instructor I’ve been involved in karate for 13 years and during this time I have also tried Ninjutsu. I’m a 1st Dan and have been teaching for 2 years. There’s a lot that I like about karate including the discipline, etiquette and the history behind it, but I love both kata and kumite, especially kumite as it enables me to test not only my own skills and ability, but also those of my students. I have many experiences with karate, both good and bad, but most of my best experiences have been with the people I train with at Lotus Defence Karate-Do. My goal is to inspire others to the extent that I have been inspired.
Instructor I’ve been training in karate for 8 ½ years, but I have also had a taste of both Jujitsu and Kobudo. Within this time I have achieved the grade of 2nd Dan and have been teaching for almost a year and a half, although I have always helped out with the teaching of the lower grades under the guidance of my mum, Sensei Liz Davies. I believe that we should all help each other and share our knowledge and experiences. I have been heavily involved with tournaments since I first started karate, which has helped to improve my everyday life. Competing in tournaments really has a lot of benefits, it teaches good sportsmanship, respect for others abilities, self discipline, self motivation and self belief, it has definitely helped me with my confidence. Over my 8 years of competing I have won numerous medals and trophies but the one I’m most proud of is getting 3rd place in the GKR Karate 2005 World Cup in Australia when I was 12 years old. The elements I enjoy most about my karate training are self defence, kata and the way it improves your physical fitness. I have a serious lung condition which has made my training difficult at times, but the physical training has helped with me to cope with my illness, helping me to stay well. My inspirations are Jackie Chan, both as a person and as a martial artist, knowing that his difficult childhood has helped to shape him into the person he is today. Also, my Grandad has inspired me to continue with my training when it has been difficult due to my illness, his strength and determination to be positive and carry on regardless of his numerous medical conditions has taught me to be determined, positive and to carry on when things are tough. My goals are to learn more kata, help as many people as I can and to keep myself well enough to keep training.
