Introduction
Karate-Do is a traditional Japanese Martial Art, an unarmed combat system. The literal term 'karate' means 'empty hand' and 'Do' means 'the way of'. It is a form of self defence using defencive movements such as evasive body movements and/or blocks and counter attacks using strikes and /or kicks. In addition to this, many people use it as a form of keeping fit.
'Karate' is the term used when referring to the traditional form of unarmed or 'empty hand' combat which originated from Okinawa often referred to as Karate-Justsu.
'Karate-Do' is 'the way of the empty hand' which refers to the development of the persons charater in addition to attempting to master the defencive combat techniques. Therefore, Karate-Do develops both the body and the mind.
Karate consists of various 'Kihon' (basic) techniques, 'Kata' (forms) and 'Kumite' (sparring).

Kihon
As mentioned above, the term 'Kihon' means 'basic' and this area of karate training refers to all of the basic techniques, in other words the blocks, strikes, kicks and stances that are learnt. These techniques are practiced both individually to improve the students application and understanding of them, as well as together in various combinations which helps the student to develop their co-ordination and practical application.

Kata
Kata is a traditional predetermined set of movements which represent defeding oneself against multiple attackers. Within the various kata there are exercises which are intended to help to improve the students balance, co-ordination and stamina.

Kumite
Kumite (sparring) is the practical application of both Kihon and Kata techniques practiced with a partner. It can be performed on different levels in accordance with the students ability and grade level, starting with rigid predetermined sequences and progressing up to free flowing techniques of the students choice.

Tournaments
Tournaments are a completely optional part of your training. They are for those students who wish to test their skills against other karate-ka from other karate schools through tournaments, they have the opportunity to display both their kata and kumite skills.
